Review: Panasonic P11 – New Kid on the Block!

Pros: Sturdy Build Quality, Catchy Design, Display & Camera
Cons: Poor performance, Shipped with Dated Android 4.1.2

The Panasonic P11 has been launched in India in Oct 2013 with a current retail price tag of Rs.14000. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 Quad-core 1.2 GHz CPU, 1 GB RAM, Adreno 203 GPU, 4 GB internal memory along with SD card support upto 32 GB, 8 MP Primary Camera + 2 MP Secondary Camera, IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen 5.0 inches with resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels & ~294 ppi pixel density and Android OS v4.1.2 (Jelly Bean).

Panasonic is a renowned electronics brand which has made an entry into Android Smartphones segment in year 2013. Panasonic P11 is a mid range smarthphone launched by the company in last quarter of 2013 to compete with likes of Samsung Galaxy Grand & Micromax Canvas series. Let’s have a closer look of Panasonic P11.

Screen & Build Quality

Panasonic P11 is a nicely built phone with quality plastics and attractive back cover. The fluorescent green removable back cover makes this phone stand out from the crowd.  It comes with couple of extra back covers which the user can change. Phone feels premium to hold and use. Overall build quality is impressive.

It sports an IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen 5.0 inches with resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels & ~294 ppi pixel density. Touch response is fairly decent and smooth. Images & videos looks fine. Under the sun visibility could have been a notch better. There is no corning gorilla glass protection on this phone. There are capacitive buttons below the screen for home, back and menu functions. A 2 megapixels secondary camera of fairly decent quality is provided on the front for video calling purpose. Panasonic P11 is not a light phone in any way, at 160 grams this device will not go unnoticed in your pocket.

Camera, Buttons & Call/Audio Quality

Panasonic P11 houses an 8.0 megapixels autofocus camera with LED flash. It captures images with maximum resolution of 3264*2448 pixels. Image quality is good for indoor clicks but for outdoor clicks there is bot of over sharpening. Camera interface has all basic functionalities like Geo-tagging, touch focus and face detection. It is also capable of recording 720p HD videos but the quality of video recording is not at par. It doesn’t have a dedicated camera shutter button.

Just like standard Android phones it has power button on right side and volume rocker on left side. Charging port & 3.5 mm audio jack is placed on top of the phone. Supplied earphones are of below average quality. Overall sound quality of this phone is also not very impressive and not for audiophiles.  Though the phone's network reception and call quality are very good..

OS/Performance and Battery

The Panasonic P11 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 Quad-core 1.2 GHz CPU, 1 GB RAM, Adreno 203 GPU, 4 GB internal memory along with SD card support upto 32 GB and Android OS v4.1.2 (Jelly Bean). Panasonic P11 comes with a neat Android UI minus any proprietary bloat ware. In the era of Android 4.3 & 4.4, the 4.1.2 Android which comes out of the box has a slightly dated fell.

Performance is nothing to write home about. Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 Quad-core 1.2 GHz CPU coupled with dated Adreno 203 GPU doesn’t perform well at all. The UI is not smooth and crisp at all. The specifications looks good on paper only to average buyers who will get attracted by the ‘quad core’ CPU which is quite week to handle even the older Android 4.1.2. 1 GB RAM doesn’t help either.

For daily average use there is no lag as such but as soon as you tap on demanding applications you will certainly feel the sluggishness which is not expected from a sub 15k smartphone. Panasonic P11 is powered by a 2000 mAh Li-ion battery which will easily last for a day under standard usage.

Verdict

Panasonic could have done a little homework before bringing P11 in the market. While the phone has excellent looks, build quality and screen, it suffers from average performance which is not expected from a mid-range smartphone priced at Rs. 15k. The specifications looks good on paper but fails to deliver in real world usage. The real value for money pricing for this phone is not over Rs. 12k. Think Digital Recommends consumers to consider other options in the market in the segment before buying P11.
