Review: HP Pavilion 15-n000 series – An ideal companion for everyday computing!

Pros: Looks, design, HP after sales support, Battery backup
Cons: Slightly dated processor (Intel i3-3217U @ 1.8 GHz)

The HP Pavilion 15-n000 Notebook PC series has two models - HP Pavilion 15-n010TX & HP Pavilion 15-n208TU. Only Difference between them is the 2GB AMD Mobility Radeon HD 8670M dedicated graphic card in HP Pavilion 15-n010TX, rest all configuration is same. Both models are powered by 3rd generation Intel Core i3 clocked at 1.8 GHz, 3 MB cache memory, 4GB DDR3 RAM,  500GB HDD, 15.6 inch LED display with resolution of 1366 x 768 Pixels, Onboard Intel HD Graphics 4000 in Pavilion n208TU/2GB AMD Mobility Radeon HD 8670M dedicated graphic card in Pavilion 15-n010TX and genuine Windows 8.1 operating system. HP Pavilion 15-n208TU & HP Pavilion 15-n010TX retails for Rs. 34,000 and Rs. 36,500 respectively.

Design, Build Quality & Display

HP Pavilion 15-n000 Notebook PC series is available in two designs/colors. 15-n010TX is available in Imprint Mineral Black Horizontal Brush Pattern and 15-n208TU in Imprint Pearl White with Micro Dot Pattern. Both models look nice with typical HP design and build quality. Dimensions & weight for both models is same - 385.5 x 258 x 22.6 mm and 2.30 KGs.

The screen is very thin and that what makes this laptop stand out from the crowd. Plastic quality used for building chassis and panels is excellent. Laptop chassis boundary is chrome plated. Overall feel and quality is very premium. Full marks in this area.

HP Pavilion 15-n000 Notebook PC series sports a 15.6 inch HD BrightView LED Backlit Display with resolution of 1366 x 768 Pixels. Screen is indeed bright and crisp. Display quality is very nice with perfect color saturation levels and contrast ratios which results in enhanced movies and pictures experience. HP TrueVision HD Webcam offers nice image & video quality.

Speakers, Ports, Keyboard/Touch Pad & Drives

HP Pavilion 15-n000 Notebook PC has, Dual Speakers with DTS Sound enhancing technology. Sound quality is superb with HD audio. So far this is the best laptop in terms of stereo sound quality – makes it a perfect entertainment machine. It has one USB 2.0, two USB 3.0 ports, a mic in port, RJ45 10/100 LAN port, HDMI port, multi card slot & headphone jack. It supports IEEE 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN along with Blutooth 4.0.

It has Island-style Keyboard with standard set of keys and full number pad. Keys are well spaced which makes typing very convenient. Touchpad with Multi-touch Gesture Support is smooth and accurate in function. Optical drive features an 8x SuperMulti DVD RW Drive with Dual Layer Support. Pavilion 15-n also has a Kensington Lock Slot for security.

Performance, OS, Storage & Battery life

HP Pavilion 15-n208TU & HP Pavilion 15-n010TX are powered by 3rd gen by 3rd generation Intel Core i3 (3217U)clocked at 1.8 GHz, 3 MB cache memory, 4GB DDR3 RAM,  500GB HDD, Onboard Intel HD Graphics 4000 in Pavilion n208TU/2GB AMD Mobility Radeon HD 8670M dedicated graphic card in Pavilion 15-n010TX and genuine Windows 8.1 operating system.

For day to day applications, the Intel Core i3 (3217U) 1.8 GHz processor is just fine but it lacks the raw performance due to its clock speed. However, since it consumes only 17 watts, it makes for a very power efficient laptop resulting in extended battery backup time. It hardly heats up, runs very cool and quiet. If you play games then choose HP Pavilion 15-n010TX over n208TU as it comes with a dedicated AMD Mobility Radeon HD 8670M graphic card which has 384 shader processing units as compared to 16 units in Intel HD 4000 onboard graphics present in n208TU.

It comes with genuine Windows 8.1 operating system. There are quite few changes in 8.1 as compared to Win8. The first one is the start button and the second major difference is that now you can have only selected applications on your metro screen which makes the metro UI uncluttered as compared to Win8 where all apps pins permanently to metro screen.  Overall Windows 8.1 performance is fluid and lag free.

It has 500 GB SATA HDD and 4 GB DDR3 RAM expandable to 12 GB with its 2 slots. The 4 cell battery provides 3-4 hours of backup – thanks to the power efficient but slow 3217U Core i3 processor. If you play games on n-010TX model then battery backup reduces to around 2 hours. No overheating complaints in both models. HP offers 1 Year Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) onsite Warranty.

Verdict

For day to day users this laptop is very good with its impressive design & build quality. While there is no doubt that this is very power efficient laptop resulting in excellent battery backup time but lacks the punch of Core i3 3120m processor. Think Digital Recommends HP Pavilion 15-n000 Notebook series.
