Quick Hands on: HTC Desire U – Doesn’t leaves a lot to be desired!

Pros:  Build Quality, Sophisticated Design, Display & Camera

Cons: Could have been cheaper by at least 2 grands!

The HTC Desire U is a sub 10k smartphone powered by a single core 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM,  4 GB internal memory along with SD card support upto 32 GB, 5MP autofocus camera,  Dual SIM, 4.0 inches Super LCD capacitive multi-touchscreen with resolution of 480 x 800 pixels (~233 ppi pixel density) and Android 4.0.3 ICS.

Screen & Build Quality

HTC is known for its sleek design and sturdy build quality. Even for a 10k phone they have used high quality plastics and design which makes this phone belong to a higher segment. The screen is surrounded by a chrome boundary finishing. On the rear, the camera lens is also surrounded by chrome finishing. HTC logo is imprinted on the middle and beats audio logo near the speaker grill.

HTC Desire U has a 4.0 inches Super LCD capacitive multi-touchscreen with resolution of   480 x 800 pixels (~233 ppi pixel density). Touch response is very nice and smooth. The color, contrast ratios are decent for a 10k smartphone. It has compact dimensions of 62.3x118.5x9.3 mm and weighs just over 110 grams which makes it very light weight as well.

Camera, Buttons & Call/Audio Quality

HTC Desire U has a 5MP autofocus camera which produces images of maximum resolution 2592х1944 pixels. It is also capable of recording WVGA videos. Indoor image quality is below average whereas day time photos are of better quality. There is no secondary camera and dedicated shutter button on this phone.

Power button is placed on top of the phone along with 3.5mm audio jack. Volume rocker is on left side. Call quality is good with clear vocals from the ear piece. Loudspeaker is also fairly loud and clear. HTC supplies standard earphones with Desire U which have nice sound quality. Beats audio enhancement definitely makes a play here.

OS/Performance and Battery

HTC Desire U is powered by a single core 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM,  4 GB internal memory along with SD card support upto 32 GB and Android 4.0.3 ICS.Considering its low end configurations don’t expect this phone to handle games and multitasking as such. Though it can play games like candy crush, temple run etc easily. Android ICS interface is fairly smooth along with HTC sense UI which has a premium feel. There is no lag as such but multitasking is an issue.

This phone is best suited for normal call functions and few apps like whatsapp, facebook and gmail. This phone will not receive any Android OS upgrades in future. It is powered by Li-Ion 1650 mAh removable battery which will last you for a day with normal use.

It is a dual sim phone which supports 3G + GSM combination. Both networks are available at same time. HTC also provides 25GB of drop box space free which you can use for uploading your photos and other stuff on the go.

Verdict

In the budget of 10k, HTC Desire U is a nice phone but performance wise it is a downer if you compare with Micromax and similar phones.

For average daily use it is a nicely built & decent phone which ticks most of the boxes for a 10k smartphone. It could have been cheaper by a grand or two making it nice value for money device. Think Digital recommends HTC Desire U.
