Which External Portable Hard Disk To Buy?

External hard drives are becoming a must have computer accessory these days considering the enormous amount of data we store on our computers that eats away the precious internal HDD space very quickly and makes the system slow. So it necessitates to transfer data to some other storage.
It is also very important to maintain backups of important  data like photos, documents etc and external hard drives are best for this purpose as well.

External hard drives also proves to be very handy when we want to transport data from one place to another or from one system to another. While there are so many brands & models available in the market, the customer gets confused upon checking out so many options in different price range.

Think Digital brings you two selected products which are tried and tested and you can trust on them to store your precious data. 2.5" HDDs should be considered for better mobility as they don't require external power source. Think Digital recommends customers to buy 1 TB HDD instead of 500 GB since the pricing difference between the two is not much and 1 TB HDDs are value for money.

Review: Lenovo Essential G505s – Game On!

For: Build Quality, Looks, Price Slim Design & Screen.
Against: Nitpicking like only 3 USB Ports & slightly heavy.

The Lenovo Essentials G505s series belongs to everyday computing & gaming segment which uses AMD CPUs & GPUs in its machines. I have two G505s series laptop –

1) Lenovo Essential G505s (59-379987) laptop powered by APU Quad Core A8 processor with 1MB cache, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB  HDD, 15.6 inch HD LED anti-Glare Display, AMD Radeon HD 8570 2GB DDR3 dedicated graphics card and pre-installed Windows 8 operating system. G505s (59-379987) is priced at Rs. 36,000.

2) Lenovo Essential G505s (59-380146) laptop powered by APU Quad Core A10 processor with 4MB cache, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB  HDD, 15.6 inch HD LED anti-Glare Display, 2 GB ATI Sunpro HD 8570 Graphics dedicated graphics card coupled with  512 MB AMD Radeon HD 8650G Integrated graphic card and pre-installed Windows 8 operating system G505s (59-380146) is priced at Rs. 38,000.

Design, Build Quality & Display

Both laptops of the G505s series are nicely built with slim design and textured matt finish body panels. Overall build quality is respectable. The laptop weighs around 2.5 kgs and feels very nice to hold due to its slim form factor. G505s is lighter as compared to the other models in similar price range. The matte finish makes the laptop look premium and can put other laptops to shame with its design and build quality in 40-45k category.

Both models have 15.6 inch LED display offering standard resolution of 1366 x 768 Pixels. It will be just fine for movies and gaming. Screen offers crisp and clear text, image & video quality. On the top of the screen panel there is a Webcam which offers above average video/image quality.

Speakers, Ports, Keyboard/Touch Pad & Drives

The Lenovo G505s has stereo speakers with Dolby advanced audio which enhances gaming & movie experience. Sound quality is very good. The multi gesture touch pad is nice to use with accurate sensing. G505s has only 3 USB ports including two 3.0 USB ports and one 2.0 USB ports. Other ports includes RJ45 LAN port, HDMI port, VGA port, Multi card slot and audio/mic port. It has a DVD RW optical Drive.

The Lenovo’s AccuType non-backlit Keyboard is full sized with num pad. I am not too impressed with the keyboard attributing to the fact that it is not very responsive and not suitable for prolific writers, though it is good enough for regular use. Lenovo provides a one touch recovery key across its ‘Essentials’ series.

Performance, OS, Storage & Battery life.

Lenovo Essential G505s (59-379987) laptop powered by APU Quad Core A8 processor with 1MB cache, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB  HDD, 15.6 inch HD LED anti-Glare Display, AMD Radeon HD 8570 2GB DDR3 dedicated graphics card.

Lenovo Essential G505s (59-380146) laptop powered by APU Quad Core A10 processor with 4MB cache, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB  HDD, 15.6 inch HD LED anti-Glare Display, 2 GB ATI Sunpro HD 8570 Graphics dedicated graphics card coupled with  512 MB AMD Radeon HD 8650G Integrated graphic card.

Both laptop comes with preinstalled Windows 8 operating systems.  For layman who wants to compare AMD with Intel, A8 is Intel i3 equivalent & A10 is Intel i5 equivalent.

For all general day to day tasks, both models of G505s performs at ease. Both have the AMD Radeon HD 8570 2GB DDR3 dedicated graphics card handles all latest graphics hungry games easily like GTA4, NFA, F1 2013 etc.

Lenovo Essential G505s (59-380146) with A10 processor, 8 GB memory and 2 GB ATI Sunpro HD 8570 Graphics dedicated graphics card coupled with  512 MB AMD Radeon HD 8650G Integrated graphic card is the real performance machine for power users. On battery power, graphics is handled by 512 MB AMD Radeon HD 8650G Integrated graphic card.  Maximum expandable meory capacity is 16 GB for this model while it is 8GB for earlier model.

Both laptops have 1 TB HDD  @ 5400 RPM which is more than enough for all data including music, movies & games. All heavy programs like IDEs, Adobe suites and games runs lag free on both machines with A10 having edge as far as performance is concerned.

As such there is no overheating problem. The standard 4 cell battery provides backup of around 3 hours under normal working conditions. It comes with 1 Year Onsite Warranty (Parts and Labour Covered).

Conclusion

AMD powered G505s offers excellent laptops for everyday computing tasks and for movies & gaming experience. At Rs. 36,000 & Rs. 38,000 both are value for money machines but it is the Lenovo Essential G505s (59-380146) with A10 processor, 8 GB memory & 2.5 GB Graphic card which offers tremendous value for money.
